Despite being a flightless bird, their flight feathers still serve an important function; they help to protect the bird when it is walking through the undergrowth of the rainforest. This bird is also thought to use the casque to help break through the dense vegetation it may encounter in the rainforest. The colorful folds of skin that hang from the cassowary’s neck are called wattles, and possibly serve as social signs when it gets dark in the forest.
